Current VDI guidelines

Everything you always wanted to know about metalworking fluids and their applications . . .

. . . you will find in the respective VDI guidelines, now in a new, updated form. The guidelines 3035 and 3397, sheets 1–3 have been completely reworked and now reflect the current technological stand on the subject of liquid metalworking tools. All four guidelines concerned with metalworking fluids, as well as the plants and systems in which they are used, have, over the last five years, been thoroughly revised. This year, a group of experts from all subject relevant sectors completed the revision and now, for the first time, all guidelines, in an up-to-date and revised form, are available.

Guideline VDI 3035 “Design of machine tools, production lines and peripheral equipment for the use of metalworking fluids” was the last document in the series to be published, in 2008.
Guideline 3035 is of great interest, above all, to design engineers and procurers of machine tools. Therefore, the latest technical expertise in the interaction of modern metalworking fluids with construction materials for machine tools was included in the new version.

Guideline VDI 3397, part 1 “Metalworking fluids” describes not only the tasks of metalworking fluids, but also defines the various types of coolants and lubricants and the basic technical requirements.

Part 2 “Maintenance of metalworking fluids” describes the mechanical, chemical and organisational measures necessary for the maintenance of metalworking fluids. After all, effective metalworking fluid maintenance means a reduction in production costs through improved processing safety as well as an increased lifespan of the liquid metalworking tools.

A considerable part of the production costs connected to metalworking fluids is a result of the disposal of used metalworking fluids.Part 3 of guideline 3397 “Disposal of coolants and cutting fluids” provides the user with valuable advice in the establishment of a disposal concept.

The guidelines, available in English and German, are a compact, yet detailed, information source for anyone wishing to know more about liquid metalworking tools. Further information related to the guidelines can be found on www.vdi.de/guidelines or www.beuth.de.
